Teach the New Dive Against Debris Specialty

Dive Against Debris Specialty Course

This month, Project AWARE is excited to announce the launch of a New Distinctive Specialty course: the Dive Against Debris Distinctive Specialty.

Led by you, the PADI Instructor, now divers of all experience levels can be equipped with better knowledge of debris issues and empowered with the skills to complete ongoing Dive Against Debris surveys.

From planning the dive to reporting the debris data, the Dive Against Debris Distinctive Specialty prepares students to participate and support regular Dive Against Debris surveys, join other surveys, or, in case of more experienced divers, to start surveys of their own.

The course:

  • Educates divers about the messy problem of marine debris – the damage done, what it is, where it comes from, and how divers are part of the solution.
  • Equips divers with the knowledge and skills needed to conduct a Dive Against Debris survey –  considerations for creating a survey dive profile, use of photography, and decision making on what to remove and what to leave behind.
  • Highlights the five steps needed to record and report findings from a Dive Against Debris dive – weigh, sort, record, dispose, and report.
  • Explains how to join the global Project AWARE movement of scuba divers protecting our ocean planet.

If you’re looking to really make a difference and support a growing global army of volunteers combatting ocean trash, then teaching this course is for you. Students will gain a PADI certification which counts towards their PADI Master Scuba Diver and they’ll be well on their way to leading and organizing their own surveys no matter where they live or dive. Plus your Instructor Rating counts towards your own PADI Master Scuba Diving Instructor rating. PADI Course Directors can also apply for the Dive Against Debris Distinctive Specialty Instructor Trainer rating.

PADI Diving Society’s 2015 Photo Contest

Choosing a Winner:

PADI Staff will narrow down all entries to a handful of finalists after the first stage has finished on 14th September.

PADI Facebook Fans will then be able to vote for the final winner between 17-26th September. The final winner will be announced on/around 6th October 2014.

A low-res image is fine to enter the contest, but the original must be min 300 dpi and in the proportion of 9.56 by 6.4 centimetres/3.75 by 2.5 inches. The winner must provide the original image digitally and sign a photo release.

  • Submissions can be marine life, divers or any aspect of scuba diving lifestyle
  • Ensure the image meets Project AWARE guidelines (no touching or feeding marine life, no image of a creature outside its natural environment)
  • Please do not add watermarks, copyright text or logos to the image

With the brand new PADI Refer a Friend campaign, PADI Divers who share their love of scuba diving with friends can receive exclusive offers – and their friends can share the benefits, too!

During the month of August 2014, the special offer will be $10US towards their next PADI eLearning course.

Tell your customers about the offer in your emails, newsletters, social media and website to encourage them to share the word about learning to scuba dive with PADI.

Here’s how it works in a nutshell:

Divers visit PADI’s Facebook page and click the ‘Refer A Friend’ tab. After liking PADI’s Facebook page, the diver clicks a link to share the special offer to their own Facebook wall. After sharing the promotion, the diver instantly receives their offer – currently, a promo code which will give them $10US off a PADI eLearning course.

Friends and family members of that diver who would like $10US off a PADI eLearning course can then re-share the deal and receive a code of their own… and so on and so on. 

Important details:

  • The special offer must be shared to the user’s Facebook wall via the Refer a Friend Facebook tab in order to receive the discount code
  • To promote Refer A Friend on your own Facebook page or eNewsletter use this smart URL: cu.pn/padi  
  • The eLearning discount is the first of three special deals that will be offered in the coming months.
  • eLearning gift codes and Scuba Review are not eligible for the $10US discount 
  • Coupon codes cannot be combined. The max discount per user is $10US

Scuba Pursuits – back to 100% PADI

PADI Europe, Middle and Africa (EMEA) is pleased to announce that Scuba Pursuits have now returned as a PADI Career Development Centre, teaching PADI courses exclusively.

Mark Spiers (Vice President, Sales, Field Services, Marketing & Business Development), Tony Andrews (Manager Field Services) and Simon Chance (Manager, PADI Retailer and Resort Associations & PADI Diving Society) visited the main store, based in Cannock (UK), to provide training for all PADI professionals. The presentation reviewed the new range of PADI products including the new PADI Open Water Touch programme.

“We are very pleased to have Scuba Pursuits back to 100% PADI and as recipients of the PADI Career Development Centre award, under Ian Forster’s expert guidance. With Ian’s outstanding knowledge and level of experience in the industry, I am sure they will go from strength to strength,” said Mark Spiers.

Ian Forster, the new owner of Scuba Pursuits, has been in the Industry for over 30 years and has been a PADI Course Director for 24 years.

“Despite the challenges of the takeover, our Facebook page has helped us communicate with our many supporters,” said Ian. “We have had a great start to the season, and are now getting the websites updated so that our divers have a complete overview of our product range and what we offer”.

PADI EMEA is now looking forward to a positive future with the Scuba Pursuits team, who will no doubt accomplish valuable business and Industry growth in line with these exciting developments.
